Treat others the way THEY want to be treated

This might be an unpopular view but stay with me - I despise the ‘goldenrule’ ‘treat others as YOU want to be treated’. I understand using this as a STARTING point with kids (or kid like adults) when teaching them to build empathy but it is not the end nor conclusion. It’s lazy. It’s like, oh I tried but didn’t try that hard. .
Adults treat people the way the OTHER person wants to be treated. At least some of the time (relationships are 2 ways afterall). It takes a little more effort and time but it’s worth it!!! It requires listening and asking, questions, engaging with the other person and then ... this one is a biggie .... believing them - even if you don’t understand or want to be treated the same - you don’t have to - it’s NOT about you (all the time). Put the effort in, pay attention to patterns, ask questions, try new things and LIsTeN #thanksforcomingtomytedtalk .
